StarCraft2 Beta Rush example

by on Feb.25, 2010, under Videos

The only thing I left out of the video is the basic base build. Other than that you see all moves made. While I wasn’t on the receiving end on this one, a game just 4-5 minutes long is just too short. But see yourself:

StarCraft 2 Impressions

by on Feb.24, 2010, under News

So I was able to play the SC2 beta for a couple hours today. I question myself why I am so surprised that SC2 is a virtual clone of SC. Yes, it does look pretty! the mechanics, the way you play even most of the units are a direct carry over from the original however. Now… is that a good or bad thing? I am not sure and I am a little on the fence about it.

The Beta is vs only and I didn’t play the original much that way. Most of my games where over within 10 minutes or less and too me that is just a bit too short. I don’t like that most of the units never make an appearance in a match because most people have figured out what units to build the fastest and rush with the quickest. Once you succeed with the rush it’s game over and no way to come back. If you don’t succeed then you done for because you expended so much energy into that rush effort. AT least that is how most of the games go. That part I know I don’t like!

Time will tell, but just as I said in the podcast. I think this will be mainly co-op play with my buddies. The vs. matches I don’t enjoy much (full disclosure dictates that I mention that I was on the receiving end in most game by a big margin) ;)

Ubisoft… you can shove it!

by on Feb.19, 2010, under News

If you listened to our podcast or even know us personally you know that we are big fans of game development on the PC and we love every quality release on the PC. In one of our previous podcast I mentioned the delay of Assassin’s Creed II while disappointing was OK as long as the game would feel and look better on the PC. It seems most of the extra time went for UBI to implement it’s new DRM scheme and this new system is spelling disaster for UBI’s future PC games. Assassin’s Creed II and Silent Hunter was on my ‘for sure’ buy list, now it dropped below DO NOT TOUCH! To lose my game and/or game progress when my comcast yet again hick-ups or I travel and I am without a Internet connection for an hour or two is a no go PERIOD! See PC Gamers look at the new UBI DRM in action.

Just like the debate over music piracy or if video games cause violence in kids, the piracy on the PC debate (from the publishers point of view) is so out of whack and not even close to reality it is not even funny. I wished the big wigs at UBI would take a minute and take a look at what Cliff Harris said in his open letter to UBI or any of his other posts about piracy and DRM. Right now UBI is creating a problem and making it worse instead of honestly approaching the issue.

If you look at the responses over at PC Gamer you see exactly what Cliff Harris saw in his look at DRM and I already heard from people I know. This scheme will make any future UBI games even more prone to piracy. It will be cracked within hours of release, available for download and people will just go with the easy way of running the game. No DLC promise, no supposed “benefit” for gamers in your new system will change that.

As it looks right now… fair well UBI, with this DRM you might as well save yourself the pain and develop for the PC. This will not fly and neither I or any of the people I know will put up with it and buy this or your future games for the PC.

Blizzards new BattleNet

by on Feb.10, 2010, under News

The StarCraft II Website has a new preview of the updated Battle.net, including a video about Blizzard’s online service where Greg Canessa explains what to expect from the upcoming Battle.net upgrade. Watch the Video Interview with Greg… well worth it.

Fully integrated, user-friendly, and fast, the all-new Battle.net makes it easy to find and play games, opening the world of online gaming to generations of players. In the 14 years since the original Battle.net’s launch, the service has seen tremendous growth both in terms of features and active players. Currently, there are more than 12 million active accounts on Battle.net worldwide.
This raises an interesting question. If the original Battle.net was so successful, why change it? Updating a service like Battle.net is a hugely complex undertaking. Are there really that many new features that Blizzard Entertainment could offer that would deliver a world-class online gaming experience to its community?
In one word: Yes.
The list of past innovations integrated into the legacy Battle.net service is long and varied — the introduction of competitive ladders, server-hosted games, online-stored characters, automated matchmaking, and more. But with the release of StarCraft II, Battle.net will evolve into an even more powerful and advanced online game service that will power all Blizzard Entertainment titles moving forward.
The final metamorphosis has only just begun….
