Video Games Lower Crime Rates?!

by on May.26, 2010, under News

I came across this article by one of the NY Times Economists.  As we all know, we are going through one of the worst economic periods in our history and normally during times like these, crime rates go up.  Instead, over the last 18-24 months, Crime has gone down.  Violent crime and property crime have litterally gone done.

The economist is smart in pointing out that we have more folks already in prison then in the past, but more importantly, police strategies, investigative procedures and technology in general has helped to either prevent incidents from happening or incarcerate would be repeat offenders before the can cause more mayhem.

What the economist found interesting, and what cracks me up, is he looked into other possibilities.  One Harvard economist mentions that one reason for the decline, and emphasizes that it is only an idea, is both the Internet and video games.  He cited the idea that these tools/toys provided a needed distraction by those who would normally be out there committing crimes.

Woot! Video Games can stop crime (maybe).
