Five Issues With PC Gaming… are you serious?

by on Jul.30, 2010, under News

OK, I just read an article over at “GAMEZONE” that raises 5 issues of PC gaming. And all I can say is… are you sure you are a PC gamer?! But I digress and let you take a look. Is he right? Since most of the people that comment on their site seem to be console guys why don’t you folks take a stab and let me know what you think. Here is how he starts and the 5 issues he has:

As a PC gamer, I love my platform of choice. I love that I can customize my machine, that I can mod my games, that I can download a mod from another user, that my games have the potential to look better than on any other platform… However, I also recognize the PC’s many shortcomings, a few of which I’ll examine in more detail here.
Digital Rights Management (DRM)
Competing Platforms
Lack Of Killer App
Hardware
Lack Of Split-screen

I kind of want to ask him to hand his true PC gamer members card in. But I would really like to hear what you guys have to say. Should make a great next podcast ;)

read the article- some of the points are valid but there is a counter-argument for all.
Digital Rights Management (DRM) – when done properly it works just fine, ie, Steam
Competing Platforms – competition breeds price wars, choice and variety benefiting gamers. One place to meet friends would be OK but isn’t better not to have a monopoly
Lack Of Killer App – as for shooters we had Crysis (before it was consumised), Mafia and FEAR. As the article said strat games work great on PC – besides most of console games are availiable on PC.
Hardware – rubbish argument. You can recycle most of your PC components and a good graphics card cost not more than $200
    Lack Of Split-screen – who cares……….

I think it was fair, drm can be quite the pain these days from the developers when done wrong. And the split screen i would also like to see more of or at least the option,(may encourage more lan parties).

But it does have killer games and really being a console gamer all my life up until about a year and half ago it really comes down to community. The console just doesnt have that, xbox to me is more of a media hub i can share with my friends but in terms of making a mod or customized experience you simply will not find on a console.

A console is like a apple computer if specs and mods are too much for you and your just looking to stay inside the developers picket fence they have built they have you covered but if you want to pave new ground and really take the experience in your own hands, make a custom experience for yourself and friends your gonna jump over that picket fence and thrive in the community, team fortress is a prime example, over 200 plus updates all for free.

You wont see this on console they would rather limit you and wait a year to spend 60 dollars for a slightly upgraded game and too boot generally on console you have to pay for everything DLC, or the right to even play with your friends online i.e. xbox live. I would say really the only downside to PC is it can get expensive if your wanting to max all settings on alot of games and some triple A titles dont show up on pc.

    PC FTW!!!

    DRM is a valid point.

Competing Platforms… I don’t understand how this is a shortcoming when all you have to do is take a look at Steam. Boom!

    Lack Of Killer App… What?!?

Hardware. Yes there are some requirements that require a user to have a specific video card, or maybe even a certain processor speed. But if you are a true PC gamer, you have the minimum requirements, and most likely the recommended requirements already.

Lack Of Split-screen… I don’t see console gamers with split screens. Oh… And one other thing… Eyefinity.

That’s what I have to say about that.
