Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 DEMO Review

by on Sep.15, 2010, under Review

We said it before and I like to say it again. If your game wants to sell, give us a DEMO. Konami seemed to be on the right track with the release of Pro Evolution Soccer (PES) 2011 and the PC demo even hit a day before the console versions.

PES has been trying to take a bite out of EA’s FIFA franchise for a long time and with the release of the 2011 version of the series is trying it’s hardest to fight against the king of licened sport. One of the hurdles PES has to overcome is that for someone that likes soccer you like to play with people you know and watch play. EA of course knows this and owns just about any franchise license name there is, be it Football, Baseball, Hockey or Soccer. It seems Konami made some headway into the license deal showing a complete Barcelona or Bayern Munich team roster in the demo, complete with players such as Messi, Mueller or Lahm.

But it needs more than franchised player names to make a good sports game! That is why this demo is so important, especially on the PC PES has a great chance to be real competition to FIFA. EA has not focused on the PC and made many mistakes with the past releases of it’s soccer game on the PC.

So as a PC loving soccer fan I downloaded the 1GB demo with much anticipation. Install was quick and painless and starting the game was no issue. But once the game runs… that is where things go horribly wrong at least what this demo is concerned.
Nothing, but absolutely nothing was learned by the mistakes of the past and the mistakes that FIFA made on the PC. It’s not worth making many sentences about it, so let’s just go down the list shall we:

  1. Only one game mode and 4 teams in two different divisions in total (for a demo almost expected)
  2. No access to the options menu
  3. No ability to change screen resolution
  4. No ability to change details settings
  5. No ability to look at the controller configuration
  6. No ability to change controller settings or button mapping
  7. No training option (kick the ball around with your own team)
  8. Default button placement for pass, shoot and such very different from the norm (at least for me, which is a issue, see point 5,6 &7)
  9. Default settings are on Pro Mode (I found out you have access to a game menu once you setup a game) which, while showing you other options only lets you change the difficult settings
  10. No commentator of the game

(*Since this review has been written I learned that you can change settings if you track down a settings.exe in the game directory. So you can change certain things, such as resolution and controller configuration. But come on… you couldn’t run this on first start up? Maybe make a note of it somewhere or link it from within the game?)

Nothing here says that Konami takes the PC serious as a platform. This smells of unpolished console port and does not look promising. To make my mouth water let me set my resolution, let me see the players, the stadium and the crowd in high detail. Why are you afraid to show me the game in high resolution?

Once in game things got a little better. Aside from the fact that the default difficulty was set to max, I struggled to learn what the buttons do and I was a goal down mere seconds into game-play even if I lost the ball deep in the opposing half. You can see how Bayern Munich (the team I choose since I am German) got hammered and outplayed at the video as a part of this review. I considered re-recording a game once I found the match options menu (which only gives you access to the difficult settings of the current match) and was more in tune with the controls. But you should see how one struggles to get a handle on things when the developers don’t want you to know anything, configure anything and generally don’t seem to care how a demo is experienced by their potential customers. Here I was thinking that a demo should do the best to show the cool and good about your product… silly me!

On the positive side of things is the fact that while I was not able to choose resolution (which according to my capture is 640×360) it still locked surprisingly good. Although you can’t really make out player faces and barley their names. Game-play was smooth and once you get a hang of the controls it feels like sprints, quick turns and passes are great and give you good control of your players.

I wished I could say more but since the training option was not present and the teams to play with where limited I did not have the chance to get really deep into it. Especially because (and forgive me for slipping one more time into the negative) some person at Konami thought it a good idea that when the game you played is over they show you a video of all the extra features the full version will include. A whole 5 minutes and 40 seconds worth of features, such as carrier mode, player transfers, be a pro and such… but here is the kicker, you can’t skip it! No pressing of any keyboard buttons short of CTRL+ALT+DEL or the controller will let you bypass FIVE MINUTES FORTY SECONDS. Are you kidding me Konami?! I figured it must be a one time thing… but no, after the second match here we where again. At least it gave me a chance to time it and yes try again every possible button to see if I am not missing something.
At least I learned in that video that I can create my own team and even a club emblem. I can make my players wear funny heads or hats, kick a keg (yes a small beer keg), a trash ball or a super sized candy around the field. Last but not least even design a stadium that you can make look like Mario lost his Princess yet again. Ohhhh brother!?!

The last part of the video has this tag-line “Engineered for freedom”. The demo didn’t show it, the video you are forced to watch makes it more look like they tried to throw everything anyone ever mentioned in a brainstorming session into the game, regardless of how silly the idea was.
So I am coming away from this demo of PES 2011 very sceptical if the team behind this game is serious about soccer and the PC as a valid platform. I guess we will have to wait for the full version and let other people do a review on that, because I will not “risk” my money on what I saw or experienced in this demo.

…. a keg of beer… are you serious….

Eh, there is settings.exe in the installation folder.. And do you really expect a games developer to give you more than the bare minimum for a demo? You can grasp the game dynamics and test how your pc runs it. Its good enough for me. The lack of commentary is a bit weird and the video at the end is annoying but at least the games are ten minutes instead of the five. Also Pro isn’t the max setting, Top Player is.. Poor review.

I appreciate you telling me about the settings.exe. But what a fail… why not auto run it on first start? Why not have a note anywhere to tell? On a PC am I expected to hunt these down and hope that they are there? It’s great that it is available, but doesn’t change my mind about PES. I will play a game and watch the video one more time trying a higher resolution.

That video at the end of every match is so annoying. I don’t want to waste 5 minutes after every 10 min game. Konami needs to do something about it.

  3. Hpi

The video at the end of every match is the only fail thing about this demo.

This is such an unprofessional review its not funny, the author clearly knows nothing about these games, he talks about all these little details that only very very amateur gamers care about and ignore the most important aspects of the game, such as the history of PES vs fifa, the GAMEPLAY improvements of this version from pes2010 etc.

This review should not be taken seriously by anyone genuinely interested in PES2011.

  4. Yooo

Just disable the video in the game settings ..

  5. timmy

go to the settings in the konami folder to change your resolution and detail settings. if you can’t even get this simple thing done then i can’t take your review seriously. sorry mate. terrible review

  6. huh?

the reviewer should apologize for this. it’s laughable

  7. Oulix

    hmmm…
    where to start?
    from the number 1!

    1. only 4 teams. ok, this is a minus, because there are only 2 possible matchups, so I agree
    2. no acces to options? u can change ALL the options needed to play comfortably. else would make demo equal to the full game.
    3. yes, you can, you have obviously never played PC PES before…
    4. DETAILS! they come in FULL game! this is DEMO!
    5. look: no.3
    6. look: no.3, no.5
    7. I agree on this one. Good point.
    8. look: no.3, no.5, no.6
    9. look: no.3, no.5, no.6, no.8 (!!!DUDE you don’t even have to go to setings for this!!!)
    10. knowing j. champion and m. lawrensen, i’m happy because of it. How ever, they said that they will change one of them, so they are keeping it for a surprise (fail, it’s known, google it)

***ok, that video is annoying as hell, but no one is forsing you to watch it! Alt+F4 and start again. (but yes, It’s a fail)

All in all, this is, no doubt, THE WORST review I have ever read!

My opinion: good demo, looking forward for the whole game. it has potential to be ten times better then PES 2010 (and the best FOOTBALL game ever).

  8. Thomas

This is the worst review of anything I have ever read. You spend 90% of the review raving against issues which wouldn’t be issues if you were even halfway competent.

The Settings are in the Start Menu next to the PES launcher – just as it has been in each and every version of PES on the PC.

    Shame on you!

  9. Anky

Almost everything he says can be sorted out by using settings.exe (including disabling the video at the end) .. the only thing i didnt like about PES which also is the case in fifa 11 demo .. is the ability to map the keys according to your keyboard with detailed info as to what key is being used for what action.

  10. Anky

Playing both the demos … i still feel they are both trying to make better pc ports then before but not good games for PC, dnt knw which one of them will win, but we pc gamers will lose for sure, that i am sure of, both games feel lacking in different aspects then the other, but both of them are still behind their console counterparts. *Sigh* When will pc gamers get the love they deserve, all i want from sports dev’s is a good FIFA & an F1 game.

  11. OMG

i have problem with replay, is it happen because my proc only run P E2140 1.6 Ghz

  16. DMX1982

    Hmmmm,

You clearly suck at pes or have clearly never played it if you didnt know the controlls.

As for the teams and rosters and so on ….. What more do you want from a demo you numpty !!!

This game marks the return to form that we have all waited for for the last 4 – 5 years.

Pro is back at last. You should go and learn something before you write a review about it.

    Noob !!!!!

Well, you’re writing absolutely nothing about the game, only complaining about “problems” you could’ve resolved if you looked a little.
This review is a complete fail i fear.

  23. ha

What a piss poor review. I’ll assure you I won’t be coming back here.

  24. daswarleidernix

It sounds like you were trying really hard to talk this game down into the ground. Before I even started the game I went into the settings.exe to change the resolution as well as gamepad controls. It’s always been like that and you only gotta do it once.
It just doesn’t seem like you’ve been familiar with PES. PES is realistic and difficult, but absolutely worth it. Maybe you prefer FIFA, it’s easier.
There is also a patch that you can install to lengthen the game to 20 or more minutes, I love it :)
Also some of those comments by people could be nicer. You guys don’t have to be so mean.
I am German too, I live in the USA and I am impressed with your English. That was the best thing about your review.
Give PES another try. It’ll be worth it.

  25. Dohko89

really bad review, the pro evolution/winning eleven games have always had their settings configuration on a different .exe file, if u didnt know, then you are not a true fan of the series, and of course you dont know about soccer, im sorry but you need to know more about something to review it, you cant just play it once and start giving your opinion…

  26. Akshay Lal

    Really poor review
There seriously needs to be some criteria for people who should be allowed to write reviews.
At least the reviewer shouldn’t be a cry baby whit less than normal IQ.
Looks like you are one of the n00bs who consider FIFA better than PES.
Those who understand football, can only understand the difference in class between the two games.

  27. Mike

    Lets get to your list:

    1. ok just 4 team … that’s poor
    2. there is an option menu when you pick your team
    3,4,5,6,8. Just run settings.exe (progamer :/ )
    7,10 thats demo…
    9. Yes you can (Have you ever play PES or WE somwhere??)

The Video you can switch off in settings: just mark (disable movie playback)

after all… the worsest reviewer i ever read.

  28. bullsize

    Good Review.

    @all above

    fuck off

  29. BlackThunder

Let’s be very clear. I neither purchased FIFA nor PES in the last couple years. I have a 360 version from about 5 years ago and a Winning Eleven for the PC even older.
If you make a comment about the review PLEASE don’t keep saying… “if you would be familiar with the series you would have known” That is a BS argument. Why should I, or for that fact anyone that downloads the DEMO be. The point of a demo is to make it accessible to new people, not just fan boys. And a lot of the flack I got for the review is from the fanboys of PES.
I am a soccer fan and I don’t have any love for EA. I wanted to like PES, but my first hour with the demo pissed me off because of all the things I mentioned. That is why I did not, nor do not intend to change anything about my demo review. It fails as a demo assuming people should know things that are so 5-8 years ago.
If Konami wants to release a piss poor demo for the pc so be it, I won’t love them just because they are the lesser evil to EA.
If you would really love the PES franchise than help Konami to be better by telling them what they do wrong instead of defending bad presentation!

  30. KYS

The settings are in the start menu directory. Not that fucking hard to find. You obviously decided to whine about it before even bothering to look (judging by how almost all your points are about settings).

Your other points are about how PES isn’t like fifa, so while you say you have no bias, in reality you do and have shown it.

as for the video, if you had any pc knowledge at all, disabling the video via settings or deleting it would be a piece of cake.

Also, most of the body of your review was about the video, or how you couldn’t find the settings or how the settings weren’t the ‘Norm’. Absolutely nothing at all was written about the actual gameplay of the demo.

I give this review a solid F, hope you don’t have aspirations of being a real game critic, because you got a long way to go.

pes 2011 is the best forever. no fifa any more
