This just in… “No One Plays First-Person Shooters On PC Anymore”

by on Sep.20, 2010, under News

According to Kinect creator Kudo Tsunoda Halo killed the first person shooter on the PC. At least now I know why so few people have been playing with me the last couple month (I hope you hear my sarcasm) Here is what he said in an interview with GameInformer:

If you think about the way that first person shooters evolved, they started on the PC. People for the longest time tried to port shooters from the PC onto the console. And people said the same things that they are saying now about Kinect – “It’s never going to be responsive enough to do this,” or “You’re never going to get a fun first person shooter on the console – it’s only made for a keyboard and mouse and that is the way it is supposed to be played.” And as long as everyone was just porting the existing shooters over to console, they weren’t as fun as the PC ones. Of course, they were built for the PC.

Halo did an awesome job of building a first-person shooter exclusively for the console, and now hardly anyone plays first person shooters on the PC anymore. It’s all about the console. And I feel it is the same with Kinect stuff. If you are constantly trying to take something that is made for a controller and port it over to Kinect, it’s not going to be a good experience because it is made for a controller. If you take the time to build it for Kinect from the ground up, however, you can make something that is a very new experience, but lots of times even more fun than it was before.

He makes the koolaid and drinks a ton of it. I’m at a loss of words, it’s just too silly to talk about his statement(s).

True. It’s funny how he points to one of the 3 real shooters that are exclusively on the console and says that’s the reason nobody is playing PC FPSs. Other than Halo, Resistance and Killzone, I can’t think of any other decent shooters designed specifically for the console. Not to mention that the other two are Sony products. So, really, Halo is the only good shooter that was made exclusively for the Xbox. I guess it’s our fault. I don’t think we got the memo to turn in our time sheets for all the hours we logged playing Crysis, Crysis: Warhead, Modern Warfare, all the Call of Duty’s, Bioshock 1 and 2, Doom 3, Half-Life 1 and 2, Portal, Team Fortress, Counter-Strike, the F.E.A.R.s, the S.T.A.L.K.E.Rs, the Battlefields, the Far Cry’s, Left 4 Dead 1 and 2 and any other FPS that we have played on the PC. This guy isn’t just trying to serve us the koolaid. He’s got the hose going full blast in our face praying to God that some of it will get in our mouths and we’ll say, “I guess it’s alright.”

Over 100k people are playing CS 1.6 right now… And how old is that game? This is a prime example of the corporitization of the gaming industry and yet at the same time hilarious because of a blind inward look at the market.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I was lead to believe that CS Source (and the original CS for that matter) was the most widely played shooter in video games right now. This is just a testament to the rampant arrogance that console companies (and console players) spurt out of their anus. Disgusting.

Ok, now I’m back from a successful trolling raid on the game informer article’s forum, shooting down fanboys left and right like a freshly flushed flock of pheasents with my 12-gauge shotgun. Boom.

From his perspective, it IS all about the console. Thats not to say that his statements are true, because they clearly aren’t.

Either way, Microsoft is paying him to have tunnel vision. Which is why he makes such bold and untrue statements.

He does have a valid point. Halo did do a good job at creating a very “pc like” game where there was a lot of customization. I have a few friends who went crazy and had so much fun with the map editor.

“nobody plays shooters on the PC” is a blatant exaggeration, yes, but look at the sales of MW2 for Xbox 360 and PC. Xbox 360′s sales compared to PC is like Mt. Everest compared to an ant hill. Huge difference in sales. I play MW2 at a friends house some times, and there were millions of people online playing it(according to IWNet player count thing in the corner of the screen)While steam stats show a constant 75,000 players at its peak. Halo 3 is the same way. There are far more people playing on the console.

Which one is better for FPS gaming is a matter of personal preference.(PC has my vote. More responsive)

    one word

    Bollocks

Crysis, Stalker, Bioshock….yeah right no one plays FPS on PCs. Oh look a flying pig !

    Space Guy,

Good comment in regards to MW2, but if you want to really get at the truth, combine ALL the players playing console shooters and compare those numbers to the combined numbers of PC shooter players. It’d be a staggering difference.

Considering the large success of BC2, the continual play of CS and not to mention, Steam sales are not included (if I remember correctly) for MW2 on the PC.

“Halo did an awesome job of building a first-person shooter exclusively for the console, and now hardly anyone plays first person shooters on the consle anymore. It’s all about the PC.”

    Fixed!

  11. Practitioner

I never expect a Microsoft guy to speak highly of PC gaming. They have to save every positive word for a reason why you should buy another Xbox when your’s breaks.

I hope you guys know this is the mastery of Microsoft’s marketing engine being put to work right? They have mastered the way to get press to notice anything they want and manipulating them in the process.

  13. TheRed|Kommie

They just want to sell more Halo: Reach… thats all there is to this!

    The Panda has spoken!
