Simon’s basic League of Legends guide…. (with tweaks by Kommie)
by Simon on Jan.24, 2011, under Gaming
First of all, I am not a pro player or high level player, but what I am is a player that really enjoys this game. So I can (with help!) put down a very basic guide that will fast track you from level 1 to around level 15 or so. From then on, you have to “understand” the game yourself. (Guide for only 5v5). Also English is my 2nd language, so don’t hate my grammar. (Kommie: Oh I hate!)
This is something of a work in progress, but PLEASE GO AHEAD AND POST A COMMENT!

- There are 3 “lanes” or paths to the opponent base, each lane has 3 turrets and 1 inhibitor. There is also a river cutting though the middle of the map.
- Turret deals quite a lot of damage and have high amount of health.
- Turret will attack you if you are in their range. However it will attack your minions first if your minions get in range of the turret before you. If you attack an opponent champion, the turret will attack you no matter if there are friendly minions or not.
- There are also neutral monsters on the field that give you bonus attack power, mana regen, etc. The big red worm thing is called Baron Nashor. Killing it will give your team a good attack bluff. It’s in the middle of the upper part of the river. Killing the Dragon will give gold and it’s in the middle of the lower part of the river. Both have a lot of health so its not a good idea to attack them by yourself. Also there are two others that give a mana & cool-down buff on your abilities, and another two that give damage-over-time & slow down. These last ones are spread out in the “jungle”, one of each on each side.
- You always want to have “last hit” / kill on the minions so that you get more gold.
- Goal – The goal of the game is to get to the opponent team base and destroy their nexus while at the same time stopping them from doing the same to your nexus.
- Attacks – There are three types of “attack”
- True (Pure) damage: Caused by ignites and some Champion abilities. Nothing mitigates this type of attack (Though there are some spells and items that can block it).
- Physical damage: Normal standard attack and some champion abilities. You need to build ARMOR to counter physical damage
- Magic damage: Some champions do standard attacks as magical, and a lot of champion abilities are magic based. You need to build MAGIC RESIST to counter magic damage
- Leveling:
- You the “player”, is called a summoner. The level cap for summoners is 30. Summoner pick a champion to play for every game and champion starts at level 1.
- The higher your summoner level is, the more “bonuses” you can have on your champion.
- The Higher you Champion Level is, the more stats (HP, Mana) & abilities you get (There are four, including one that is an ultimate type that you get at 6th and twice more though your 18 levels) which do more damage as you pick the abilities again and again.
- Runes: You can buy runes only with IP which you earn by playing the game. Runes can add small little help such as health, magic resist, armor, attack damage, attack speed, etc…
- Mastery point: each level you gain 1 mastery point that you can point either into attack, defense, or utility.
- There are different type of champion classes. LoL is a big team game and every champion has a counter of some sort. You don’t want to have 5 tanks in a team or 5 supports in a team.
- Tank: This is a champion that has the most Health and build around Magic Resist and Armor. (Nunu, Rammus…)
- Carry: This is the main dps class. Carry usually starts off slower but with level and items, they become very strong. They carry the team to victory. (Katrina, Ashe)
- Support: Type of champion that heal or assist teammates during team fight by giving buffs. (Janna, Sona, Taric…) The buffs can be either attack damage, increased speed, etc.
- Jungler: Type of champion that level up by jungling (Fighting in the, killing neutral monsters) instead of laneing. (Warwick, Uyder)
- Winning the team fight usually depends on the following things:
- CC: Crowd control. It is the term used to describe a spell or ability that temporarily reduces a champ ability to affect a fight. Good Champ that has CC include Ashe’s ulti, Kassadin’s Q, Teemo’s Blind.
- When and where to start a fight: Normally the best place to start a team fight is near your turret so that your turret can help. A Tank should ideally is the one to pick when to start. That’s a tank’s job. Go in CC and let them attack you.
- Never ever ever ever start off a team fight blowing all your abilities trying to kill the tank (which usually the closest opponent to you). A tank is meant to take that damage. A tank may kill you in 30 sec, but a carry will kill you and your teammates in 10 (This is an example… there are reasons for this to be more like 3 seconds).
- Killing order: Support -> Carry -> Tank (Support and carry can switch depends on location and how the fight started)
- A balance team will have many CCers. Even a tank should have some sort of CC. CC their many caster or healer in the back will help you win fight.
- LEAVE THE TANK ALONE
- LEAVE THE TANK ALONE…REALLY!
- Why are you still attacking the tank? (Kommie: Cause I’m Eating!
- Watch this video of Xin Zhao 1v5 pentakill (5 kills by one player) against opposite team by himself. He took out sona (healer), then damage dealers, then finally tanks.
- Ganking
- The easiest way to kill a champion is to gank. If you are alone in a lane and you don’t see opponent champions on the mini map, beware! Stay close to your turret because they will be trying to gank you!
- Buy Sight Wards. This is an item that you can put in anywhere of the map and it will give you sight of that area for 3 minutes. It eliminates the ganking and helps knowing if an opponent is going somewhere. so you can gank them.
- Pay attention to the mini map. It’s the single most important factor in the game. It’s there for you to know where everyone is. (Simon: KOMMIE WHY ARE YOU NOT PAYING ATTENTION TO THE MINI-MAP!) (Kommie: I am still eating!)
- Back Dooring – It means when there is a team fight going on bottom lane, you go to top lane and try to take out their turrets.
- Don’t do it. It’s difficult to master and Turret is overrated in late game.
- If you die trying to take out a turret, that’s not backdooring, that’s feeding. Feeding the opponent team.
- A well feed carry champ can easily 5 kill (ace) your team.
- I will say for first 15 levels, just pick 1 champion and play it exclusively. Go to youtube and leaguecraft to find the best build and best way to play that champion. Master it before you move on to another.
- When picking a champ to play, remember the different class. Say you mastered ashe, it will be easier for you to play another range carry like caitlyn. So try to master a range carry, a melee carry, a tank, a support, and a jungler. Then you will be able to play all the champions with an idea on how the play style should be.
- Don’t get stuck with a champ that you cannot master. Twisted Fate is one of the best and coolest looking champ, but he is one of the hardest to play. Instead, pick someone that’s easy to play and learn the game before you pick a hard champion. Annie, Ashe, Vladimir, Teemo, etc..are some easy champions.
- There are no OP champions, only OP players. What I meant is don’t complain about how powerful a champion is, because you can play that champion as well.
- Don’t die. LOL seriously, play passively when you need to. Don’t get caught off position. A 4v5 team fight is a lot easier than a 5v5.
- Be a team player. Everyone has a role in a team, when it comes to team fight, be there!
- There are bad players and there are good players with bad games, it is what it is. You can’t win all the games.
- Youtube your champion’s guide and leaguecraft your champion’s build. Know the in and out, when and where to fight, how and what combo to use.
- Save yourself! When you and your teammate getting chase by opponents champ, save yourself will be the first thing to do. If you can save yourself while saving your teammate (such as slowing the opponents team down), then do it. If your tank and your team is fighting, unless you are nearly dead, then stay and help!
- Remember the first 5 sec of the team fight is where the most of the damages are dealt.
- Never run straight into a brush to see if anyone’s in there. NEVER! (Kommie: I like to face-check them! OH LOOK THERE IS A PARTY HERE! And they all brought very painful looking presents.)
- Communicate with your teammates. Call out MIA (missing in action) if the champ you are up against suddenly isn’t in your lane anymore, he maybe trying to gank your teammate somewhere! Look at chat menu to see if your teammate report MIA, play it safe if there are opponent champions that’s MIA. (Simon: KOMMIE REALLY! I said stay by the Tower!) (Kommie: Again I was eating!)
- Have fun. You will lose games. My Score isn’t that good and my record is 160-141 (Kommie: I’m 171-151) in normal game. As long as you are winning 50% of the game, you are fine.

Now that you have read Simon’s basic League of Legends Guide (With help from the Peanut Gallery) check out Riot Games New User Guide as well. It has some nice videos!
At last, watch this tutorial. It is Very good about zoning and turret range and brush, etc.

Thanks Simon (and Kommie). Great post! Look forward to playing with you guys soon. Just as a side note, I believe backdooring can also be using a champions ability to teleport into the opponents base and quickly take out an inhibitor.
